Adoption Policies
  1. PEAC does not purchase birds, even to remove them from bad situations.

  2. PEAC accepts birds donated to our organization by their current owner and those found outside whose owner is unable to be located within a reasonable period of time.

  3. PEAC does not breed birds or place birds into breeding situations.

  4. PEAC does not adopt birds to children.

  5. All potential adopters are required to attend the Avian Basic Care Seminar.  Additionally, potential adopters of medium and large birds are required to attend the Parrot Personalities seminar and the Understanding, Preventing & Resolving Behavior Problems seminar.

  6. Potential adoptive parties will receive an adoption application after attending the required seminars.

  7. All potential adoptive parties will receive a home interview done by a volunteer prior to being approved for adoption.

  8. Approved adoption applications will be placed on a waiting list if a bird is not currently in our system that would be a good match for the approved adoptive party.

  9. As a general rule, we will not place a parrot in a home where another has been adopted/acquired within the past 18 month time period, regardless of where the existing bird was acquired.

  10. Adoptive parties are required to pay a non-refundable adoption fee, including any and all vet fees PEAC has incurred for a particular bird. Basic adoption fees (not including vet bills) are as follows:

    Budgerigars, Cockatiels, Lovebirds: $ 25
    Brotogeris, Parrotlets, Ringnecks: $ 50
    Quakers, Lories, Lorikeets: $ 75
    Conures, Poicephalus, Caiques: $100
    Mini-Macaws, Small Cockatoos: $125
    Amazons, African Greys, Pionus, Eclectus: $150
    Larger Macaws and Cockatoos: $175
    Rare species: $200

  11. Adoptive parties are responsible for providing a PEAC-approved cage, separate play gym and gram scale for any bird being adopted. 

  12. Adopted birds are to remain in the home and be treated as a member of the family.

  13. Adopted birds may not be sold, given away, bred, or used for any type of monetary purpose.  If for any reasonan adopted bird is unable to stay in an adoptive home, the bird must return to PEAC.  There is no reimbursement of any adoption fee. 

  14. After attending the required seminars, those wishing to adopt a first-time large bird, such as a Amazon, African Grey, Cockatoo, or Macaw will be required to spend hands-on time with that species under supervision of one of our volunteers before being approved.

  15. As a general rule, we do not place a bird known to be exceptionally noisy (such as a cockatoo or macaw) in an apartment or condominium.

  16. As a general rule, PEAC will not adopt birds as companions to other birds.

  17. As a general rule, PEAC does not place birds into aviary situations.

  18. Birds must remain in a 100% smoke-free environment.
